- Psalm 62:1-6
In this Wednesday evening study, we conclude Psalm 139 and begin exploring Psalm 62. The psalmist teaches us about waiting on God in silence—not passively, but with expectant faith. We examine what it means for our soul to wait upon the Lord, understanding the soul as the essence of our being (mind, will, and heart). Through careful study of cross-references, we discover that God is our rock, our salvation, and our defense—a strong tower where we find protection and perspective for our future. The speaker emphasizes how reviewing God’s greatness and faithfulness helps us move from “I shall not be greatly moved” to “I shall not be moved” at all. We’re also reminded of our calling as spiritual watchmen and lighthouses to a watching world.

We are on the last part of page 32 on Psalms 139 and we're finishing up the the conclusion for the Psalms and you you can turn over there if you'd like. We're looking at verses 19 through 24. Surely thou will slay the wicked, oh God. Depart from me, therefore, you bloody men, for they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. Do not I hate them, oh Lord, that hate thee, and am not I agree with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with a perfect hatred. I count them my enemies. Search me, oh God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.
And so we talked about last week that uh he's expressed his hatred for humanism where they rejected God and uh and how he's he just uh hates that. And and folks, that's where everything is coming from today. all the transgender stuff, all of the uh all the immorality and everything, it it it it ends up being based in humanism and and humanism comes from a lack of belief in creation. Uh you really starts with creation. You got to believe that God created the heavens, the earth, and God created man. And uh and and and God has to be the center, not not man. And and so he expresses hatred for humanism.
And then he says in he says that I hate them with a in verse 22 I hate them with a perfect hatred. And so what is a perfect hatred? Uh in Ephesians chapter 4 and verses 26 and 27. Ephesians chapter 4 and:es 26 and 27. The Bible says be angry and sin not. Let not the sun go upon your wrath and you give place to the devil. Anger is not a sin. Anger is one of the emotions that God has given to us as a gift. And our emotions are not sin. But what happens? We allow the emotion to control us. That's when it becomes sin. And so a perfect hatred is one that that is not going to let the hatred control us, but we we hate those things.
And and uh we we want nothing to do with them. and and and so it's a it's a a perfect hatred and uh and and one that God is in control rather than we are in control of. And and and we have to remember the wrath of man workketh not the righteousness of God. One of the things that discourages me in today's world is I so see so many Christians that express the anger and hatred for what's going on and and and they do it in a very angry way and they do it in a very hate hateful way and and that's not right. We can hate the sin without hating the sinner. We can we can say this is wrong even though and and and and this is right without coming across as angry and wrathful and trying to and make thinking our anger is going to change things and we have to be careful of that.
And then he goes on to talk about so back in in Psalms 139, why does the psalmist ask God to search his heart when he knows God already? Um and and so why is he asking God to search? God knows. God already knows what's going on in my life. God already knows what I'm doing and what I'm not doing. He knows all of those things. And so why is he saying God search me and try me? It it's it's not for God's sake because God already knows what's going on. It's for his sake. He's saying, "God, search me and show me if there's something in me that is not right. and show me if there's a wicked way in me and and lead me in the right way.
Um and and so he's asking it for his sake. Much of prayer when we come to God is not so much that we're telling because we can't tell God anything. He knows it all already. It's more of us um it is talking to God and acknowledging his authority and our his lordship in our lives, but it's also helps us to see what's going on in our lives as well. And and so he's asking that that God would show them these things and what's going on. And so um again, if you might have cross references in your Bible, uh for verse 23, and there's a couple of cross references I want us to look at and uh learn to use your cross references.
They're very helpful tool. But look at Psalm 5 and verse number eight. You might have that as a cross reference. Psalms chapter 5 and verse number eight says, "Lead me, oh Lord, in thy righteousness because of my enemies. Make thy way straight my make thy way straight before my face." So he says, "Lord, try me, show me, search me." He says, "I want you to lead me in the way that I should go." And then go to Psalms 143 and verse number 10. Psalms 143 and verse number 10. teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God. Thy spirit is good. Lead me into the land of uprightness. And so again, he's he's asking God to to show him and to lead him in these two verses here.
And and so he's he's he's talking to the Lord. And the first thing he says is, "Try me, oh God." And the idea of try means to test. Go over to Job chapter 23 and look at verse number 10. Job chapter 23 and verse number 10 it says but he knoweth the way that I take when he has tried me I shall come forth as gold that you know gold is tested to see how pure it is and and that's what the psalmist is saying Lord I want you to try me and and to see my purity and and and and that's what we want God to do and the trials also will purify us as well and uh So it it again he says, "Try me and show me how pure I truly am and then purify me through that fire and uh and so I can be right with you."
And then he goes on to say um he says, "And know my thoughts." And the word thoughts comes from the Hebrew word for divided opinion. And uh James chapter 1 and:es 5-8. James chapter 1 and verses 5-8 says, "If any any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God and giveth all men libery and uprath not and shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that waivers like the wave of the sea driven with wind and tossed. For let not that man think that it is anything of the Lord uh a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways." And and so he's saying, "Lord, try my thoughts. I I don't want to be double-minded.
I don't want to be serving two masters. I I I want to make sure my thoughts are focused on you and and looking at that. Uh and then look at Psalms chapter 94 and verse number 19. Psalm chapter 94 and verse number 19. When I said my foot slipth, thy mercy, oh Lord, held me up. Um and and and you know when he was Oh, that's verse 18. Verse 19. in the multitude of my thoughts within me. Thy comforts delight my soul. So the Lord, I want you to look at the thoughts that I'm having. Am I really truly thinking about you in the right way? Are my thoughts towards you, Lord? Are my thoughts focused on you?
And he's he's really asking God to show him even his very thoughts and how that he's doing that. And I think that's something good for us to do. Just say, "God, try me. Test me. Show me if I truly am pure and right. Help me to purify me through the fire. And Lord, show me my thoughts. Is my thinking on track? Is my thinking focused on you the way it should be? And and all my thoughts? And that's important there as well. Okay. And then um what does it mean lead me in the way everlasting at the end? He he's not talking about salvation because he's already saved. But he says, "If there be any wicked way in me, lead me in the way everlasting."
Go over to Matthew chapter 6 and verses 19 and 20. Matthew chapter 6 1920. Lay out for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rustth corrupt, and where thieves break through nor steal and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rustth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. And and so lead me in that way everlasting. Lead me to focus on this is temporary. That's eternal. And what I do, I want to lay up treasure in heaven. I want to focus on what is eternal and not what is temporal. And so help me to be focused on the fact that I'm going to spend eternity in heaven and just a few years here on earth.
And and keeping that focus. Then go over to Colossians chapter 3. Colossians chapter 3 and verses 1-4. Colossians 3 1-4. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ siteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things of the earth. For you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory. And so God, show me my thoughts. Help me to think in a way that's eternal and not temporal. Help me to keep my focus on what's most important here in doing that.
And one of the things I was reading for tonight and just reviewing the passage, one of the things I realized is Psalms this verses 23 and 24, he asked God to search him after he talks about how that he hates those that are that are wicked and hates those that are doing wrong. But he's saying, "Lord, make sure it's not me. It's not in the flesh. Lord, make sure my heart is right when I say that." You know that, you know, when you're mad at somebody, you're upset with somebody or or you're looking at the sin that's going around you, you he said he said, "Lord, I hate this." But then he stepped back and said, "But make sure I'm right.
Make sure my heart is truly right before you." And so, I think that's something to keep in mind as well. All right. So, that ends Psalms 139. And so, let's take a look at Psalm 62. We're going backwards. Last week, I asked you to email me if you had any Psalms that you wanted us to look at before we close up on the book of Psalms. And I did get one email out of all of the people here. And uh so I chose one. They they gave me three Psalms that they want to do. And so, I chose Psalm 62 to do. And I still like to hear from you. If there's a Psalm we did not cover, if you'd like to cover it, you can tell me that and I'll take a look and see if we can do that.
All right. So, look at Psalms chapter 62. And let me let me get turned over there, too. And um it says, "Truly my soul waiteth upon God, from him who cometh my salvation." What the first thing he does here is he says, "Lord, I'm going to wait on you, but I'm going to wait in silence and rest." in silence and rest. Now the reason I mean that I'll tell you in just a moment. But uh what does he mean by my soul? He says truly my soul waiteth upon God. So when you read the word soul in the Bible, what are we talking about there? Go over to Genesis chapter 2 and look at verse number 7. Genesis chapter 2 and verse number seven.
Genesis 2:7. The Bible says, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul." And and so a soul comes from the Hebrew word, how do you pronounce that word, Clinton? Nepish. That's the word. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, both, but they're both better Hebrew scholars than I am. U, but, uh, it it's it means a breathing creature, a living being, a soul person. Look at Psalms chapter 33. Yes, sir. I believe so, the closest of the I to live. Okay, that's that's for uh actually humans uh yeah um and persons actually have metal processes and also make processes and the valition or will yeah so the soul includes the mind the heart and the will that that's what God created man to be unique in that way all right good and look at Psalm Psalms chapter 33 and verse number 20.
Whenever you're trying to understand a word in the Bible, look up other verses that use that same word. And uh Psalms 33:20 says, "Our soul waited for the Lord. He is our help and our shield." And then look at Psalms 42 and verse number five. Psalms chapter 42 verse number five. Why art thou cast down, oh my soul, and why art thou disqued in me? hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. And and so when he talks about soul, he's talking about the mind, the will, the heart of the man, the the person who they are. And then um the the Greek word for soul is it comes where we got our word psyche from.
You can put that in the parenthesis there, psyche. And uh it means life, soul or the inner self. Uh look at Matthew chap 28 and verse Matthew chapter 10 and verse number 28. Matthew 10 and verse number 28. And fear not them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Um so the spirit is where from him cometh my salvation is where the spirit is our relationship with God. Uh his spirit and our spirit come together. And so it's the spirit that that is part of our salvation. That's the part that uh we we are saved through.
And and so there's a difference between the soul and the spirit. Um look at Hebrews chapter 4 and verse number 12. Now I will tell you there's a lot of theological arguments around this exactly what they all mean and everything but in essence when you read the Bible soul is talking about who you are. When you read the Bible spirit that's talking about that that's the connection with God. Um that we're we're saved through the Holy Spirit that his spirit and our spirit in um in Romans talks about that we that's where the communion the connection is. And uh Hebrews 4:12, I'm in chapter 12. Hebrews 4 and verse number 12.
For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing even vi of soul and spirit, and the joints and marrows, and is certain of the thoughts and intents of the heart. So again, the soul and the spirit are two separate things because they can be divided and they're they're connected in many ways, but yet your spirit is what has that relationship with God and it's when he gives our spirit life, he gives us life through his spirit, this our spirit. And so um and and so they're two different things. So the spirit represents the god connected life force or inner breath while the soul encompasses personal ident identity will emotions and consciousness.
Yes, Frank. Um, we are we have a pride park in soul. We have a body of the soul and spirit. Spirit actually when you're saved is possessed. Oh, we saved. Yes. But I the soul uh sorry I I think I forgot my book. Yeah. But the body, soul and spirit is the idea. We have a physical body. We have the soul which is what we call the person. you know that their soul and then we have the spirit which is the relationship we have with God and that spirit if if we're dead in tres our spirit is dead in trespasses and sins without the holy spirit without god and we die if we don't have the holy spirit then we will not live forever and and again I don't want to get into a big theological discussion but I do think it's important to understand that when he talks about that my soul he's saying the me personally who I am my soul soul waiteth on thee, Lord.
It it's it's the essence of who I am, and that's waiting on you, God. And and so that's where he starts at. And then so when he says to that, "My soul waiteth upon God, how should we wait?" And and that's in silence. The the word for wait here is is a word which carries the idea of silence. Uh and and it is is the word wait in silence. And and I don't know about you, but I'm not good at that. I I'm not good at silence. Uh I like to have something always going in the background. When I'm driving, I like to have like a podcast playing or a sermon playing or something like that or an audio book. When I'm at home, I would like to have something going uh music or whatever it is.
I I just don't like silence. And uh and and sometimes we need that silence. We need to to stop and turn everything off so we can listen to God and uh and and and silence. And also, I believe it also includes just you need to be silent. There's times we just need to say, "God, I'm going to shut my mouth and listen, and I'm not going to tell you what you need to do. I'm not going to argue with you. I'm just going to be silent here and listen to you." And and so I think this is what he's talking about there. Look at Isaiah chapter 40. Isaiah chapter 40 and verse number 31. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.
They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Again, to wait in silence, to wait on the Lord. And that's hard for us to do. Look at chapter 64 and verse number four. Chapter 64 and verse number four. For since the beginning of the world, men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither have the eyes seen, oh God, beside thee, that what he hath prepared for them that waited for him. If we would just stop and listen and pay attention, we could really hear what God wants to tell us. And that's what the psalm is saying. Lord, I'm I'm going to stop and listen to you.
I'm going to wait on you. And that's important from that point of view. Look at Micah uh chapter 7 and uh verse number 7. Micah 7 and verse number seven. Therefore, I will look unto the Lord. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. So, he says, I'm going to look to God. I'm going to wait. I'm going to just be quiet and listen. And then one other one, Lamentations chapter 3 and verse number. Lamentations 3 and verse 25. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. And so the psalmist is saying, listen, Lord, I'm going to stop talking. I'm going to be silent here.
I'm going to listen and hear what you have to say. And and that that again, that's hard to do. You got to take in that silence. the first few minutes is your mind is all running everywhere with everything and you and you say I'm going to stop and I'm even going to silence my mind and just try to focus on what you have to say to me. And and that's what he's trying to do there. Okay. And then in Psalm 61, he says, "Truly my soul, who I am, the essence of me waiteth in silence upon God, for from him cometh my salvation." So what are we expecting from God? You know, from him cometh. I I'm waiting on God.
I'm expecting something from God. Look at Psalms chapter 5 and verse number three. Psalms 5 and verse three. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord. In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and I will look up. So he said, ' Listen, I'm going to pray and then I'm going to look up and say, ' God, what are you going to do? I'm expecting something. We pray and don't expect anything. Yeah, we have to anticipate. God, I'm expecting you to do something. Look at Philippians chapter 4 and verses 6 and 7. Philippians chapter 4 and verses 6-7. Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. So God, here's what I'm look here's what I'm wanting. Here's what I'm calling out to you for now. I'm just going to sit back, be silent, and expect an answer. Not arrogantly, but just I expect God to answer me. And so I'm going to look to that. And that's what he's saying there in Psalms chapter 62. Okay. And then in verse number two through six, he talks about God being his safe place. U by the way was with the first part we talked about verse five, he kind of says the same thing. My soul wait thou only upon my God for my expectation is from him.
And so he's expecting something from God. He's looking to God to say God I'm expecting something from you. We don't expect things from God. All right? And then he is my he he only verse two is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not be greatly moved. So he says he is my rock. Look at Psalms chapter 40. Well, let's start with yeah Psalms chapter 40 and verses 1 and two. I waited patiently for the Lord and he climbed unto me and heard my cry. See again the same same thing waited. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and establish my goings.
So I waited instead of struggling and and and fighting. I'm just going to wait in the Lord to pull me up out of this pit and establish me on the rock and to put me in that place. So he is my rock and my salvation. He says in in Psalm 62:2. So look at Psalms 18:31. Psalms 18:31, for who is God save the Lord? Or who is a rock uh save our God? He is the rock of our salvation. And then go to Psalms 19 and uh verse number 14. Psalms 19 and verse 14. Let the words of my mouth and imitation of my heart be acceptable in my sight, oh Lord, my strength, my rock, and my redeemer. And and so again, he's talking about that that he's the rock of my salvation.
That's where my strength comes from. 1 Corinthians 11:1, for other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Christ Jesus. You got to start with that foundation. You got to have the firm foundation to build upon, build your life upon. And so he's saying, "Listen, God, I'm going to wait on you because you are my rock. You're my foundation and you're my savior." And all of that kind of ties together there. Okay. Then he goes on to say, "He is my defense." Now, you might remember from the series I did on king me and the last king we talked about, I talked about this word, the word defense.
It comes from the word which means a tower. You're my defense, my tower. And um look at 2 Chronicles chapter 26. 2 Chronicles chapter 26 and verses 9 and 10. 2 Chronicles 26 and:es 9-10 and um oh I'm in 1 Chronicles let me get the right place here 2 Chronicles 26 9-10 moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate and at the valley gate and at the turn of the wall and fortified them also he built towers in the desert and dig many wells for he had much cattle both in the low country and the plains husband and also and vine dressers in the mountains in the Carmel for he loved his husbandry.
So he built these towers. Uh when you think of the towers, you can think of it being number one, they're a place of defense and strength. They were like turrets on a castle. Um you know, if you you saw a lot of castles, we were in Europe and they got those in all the corners, they got the turrets, the higher towers, so they could see down to the enemy and attack them from above and they're a place of defense. Look at 2 Samuel chapter 22. 2 Samuel chapter 22 and verses number 1 through three. And David spake unto the Lord the words of the song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies and out of the hand of Saul.
And he said, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer. The God is my rock and him will I trust. He's my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high tower and my refuge. My savior. Thou sest me from violence. And so as a place that they could have of safety above the battle, a place that they could rain down on the enemy, a place that they could not be easily taken in. That was the high tower, the defense. So it's a place of defense and strength. Um, and we see that in Psalm 62:2. And we see it again in verse number six. He only is my rock and my salvation. He is my defense. I shall not be moved.
He's my tower. And then look at Proverbs chapter 18 and verse number 10. Proverbs chapter 18 and verse number 10. The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run into it and safe. I like what it says there. The name of the Lord, the very name of God is a strong tower. just calling upon his name to to call upon the power of the name of the Lord. And so he's our our place of defense. He's our place of strength. We need to run to him and hide in him and find that that defense within him. And then it's also a place to see. Uh Genesis chapter 28 and verses 10- 22. Genesis chapter 28 and verses 10 through 22 there in a minute.
28:10 says that Jacob went out from Bashibba and went towards Heron. He lied upon a certain place and terried there all night because the sun was set and he took up the stones of that place and put them for a pillar and lay down that place to sleep. And then it goes on down there and and talks about how that when he was sleeping there, they saw the ladder and uh and and climbed up the ladder, it was God was showing him his future. And here's the thing, Jacob had a dream about that ladder to heaven. And God used that top of the ladder to see so Jacob could see his future. When you're up in a tower, you could see much further off in the horizon.
And and so the psalmist is saying, "Listen, God, you're my tower. You're not in my place of defense, but your place where I can see the future through your eyes. You you know the future. I don't know that, but you know it. And so I can come to you because you know my future. and you see what's going to be happening tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, and on down the line. And so, Lord, you're my strength in that way. Uh turn over to Jeremiah chapter 29 verse verses 11 through13. Jeremiah 29 and verse number 11. For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, sayith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Then shall you call upon me, shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you, and you seek me and find me when you search me with all your heart. I can't see the future, but I can look up at the tower and say, God, do you see what's coming? I can trust the Lord with my future and and trust him with that. And then look at Proverbs 29 and verse number 18. Proverbs chapter 29 and verse number 18. Where there is no vision, the people perish. But he keep the law happy is he. So Psalmist is saying, Lord, you're my defense. You're the place I can come to when the battle is too much. I can find refuge there.
I I can find protection there. But it's also a place where where you can see what's coming where I can't see that. You know what to expect and I can anticipate and expect the best from you. All right. And then we need to man the tower. In Ezekiel chapter 33, they would have towers throughout the land and they were watchtowers and and the job of the watchmen, they would rotate the watchmen in that tower. And his job was to look off in the horizon looking for the enemy. And uh and and and in Ezekiel 33, it says, "Listen, if you see the enemy and and warn the people and they ignore you, then it's then you're not responsible.
But if you see the enemy and don't warn the people, then you're responsible. And and so we need to man that tower. We are the watchmen that are called by God. And um and and the problem is what we do is we sit in our little ivory towers of life and we watch the world go to hell instead of warning them. You know, instead of warning our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends, instead of inviting the church, give them the gospel cha track, tell them about Jesus, we just sit up in our towers and watch them go to hell. And and we need to be in that tower as a watchman. And and the tower also is a spiritual lighthouse.
In Matthew chapter 5, it talks about we are the light of the world. And we've got to put that light up on a hill where it can be seen. And we've got to be that spiritual lighthouse to the world around us. Go over to 1 Thessalonians chapter 1. 1 Thessalonians chapter 1 and verses 7 and 8. But we were um verse 1 Thessalonians 17 and 8. So that you were examples to all that believe in Macedonia. For from you sound out the word of the Lord, not only Macedonia, Acacia, but also in every place your faith to God where to spread abroad. So we need not speak anything again. We should be the lighthouse. It shouldn't be hard to witness people because they see it in your life.
And and we're to be that lighthouse in that tower. Okay. Going back to Psalms chapter 62. Look at verse number two and look at verse number six. Very almost identical verses except for one little difference. What's the difference between those two verses? Psalm 62:2 and 6. What's the difference? It's one word. What is it? And since I guess you know about it or so like I shall res pray great pray it says later on I shall not right. So he says I should not be greatly moved and then he says I'll not be moved. One word can change the whole meaning of the verse. In verse number two, he's saying, "God, I I I'm gonna hold on, but I don't know how much I could hold on."
But by time he gets down to verse number six, he said, "No, I'm not going to be moved." He made a change in that because, and I think what happened is he kind of talked himself into that as he began to review who God was. He's my strength, my tower, my defense. As he began to review God was, he got to the point, you know what? Why am I worried? Why am I thinking I can't hold out? I I'm in God's tower. And I think he convinces himself of that. And that's the difference between the two is he's sometimes we got to we we've got to remind ourselves of the greatness and the goodness of God. We got to remind ourselves of the power of God.
This the same God. And we forget that so easily. I I know with the whole building, our old building situations over and over again, God has shown himself miraculous. every building we've gotten into, it's been a miracle of God. And and and yet every time we start looking for a new building, it's like, God, what are we going to do? You know, we forget that God is faithful and we forget that God is going to be there for us. And and and that's what he reminds himself of. And then letter D, what is the visual picture the psalmist is giving in Psalm 62:3? How long will you imagine mischief against man?
You shall be slain. He you shall be slain all of you. As a boowing wall shall you be as a tottering fence. So what what is he talking about here? What's the visual picture he's trying to give? Look at Isaiah chapter 30 and verse number 13. Isaiah chapter 30 and verse number 13. Therefore, this iniquity shall be to you as a brereech ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall whose breaking comes suddenly at an instant. He's picturing a wall that's about to fall down. Some of you have been most of you have been in my house at some point or another. And if you remember in the backyard, we've got this big huge wall across the entire backyard.
It's it's like 20t high made of block. And when we moved in there, we we found out that the guy who had built it had ne the wall, the first wall he built, it was a second wall because the first one he built, it fell down. And the reason it fell down because he never filled it with concrete and rebarb. And so there was no reinforcement on each side of the wall and it fell. So he built it again and we found out later he still didn't put concrete or rebarb in it. And so one day my wife was on the back porch looking at the wall and says that wall looks like it's a little bit crooked. And so she called a guy in the church who was an engineer in the Air Force and said, "Can you come take a look at this, brother?"
He came down and looked at it. He said, "You got a problem." And the next he said, "This Saturday, we're going to get a concrete truck down here and we're going to fill those that the wall with concrete otherwise it's going to come tumbling down." And and and that's the picture he's given. Can you imagine a huge wall like that collapsing? When the first wall fell, we're told by neighbors that it fell on his car, his truck fell on a couple sheds he back there had back there. And he said, "Listen, that's what it's like. Those of you that oppose God, you're you're you're going to be like a a wall that's falling down, a fence that's not holding up."
And it needs to be reinforced. We need to reinforce that with with God and his strength. And then goes on to talk about evil men and that only consult to cast him down from his ecstasy. They delight in lies. They bless with their mouth but they curse inwardly. So you're talking about evil men here uh and and and that that visual picture of that uh in in that way as well. Um so he's warning about their imaginations. Look again. And he says he he says um how long will you imagine mischief against a man? And and that's what man does. Look at Romans chapter 1. Romans chapter 1. Romans chapter 1 and look at verses 21- 23.
Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, became vain in their imagination as their foolish heart was darkened, professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made light to corrupt man and to birds and for-footed beasts and creeping things. And um let's see that those are verses there. So they became vain in their imaginations. And he uses that same word vanity in Ro in Psalms chapter 62. Later on, he talks about the vanity of thinking that somehow you can oppose God. Thinking that that you as a human can be the center of everything and and that imaginations that wicked imaginations that they had.
And then turn to second Corinthians chapter 10. 2 Corinthians chapter 10. And look at verses 3-6. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal fleshly, but mighty through God to the pulling down strongholds, casting down imaginations, every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and every thought to the obedience of Christ. He's saying, "Lord, I want you to help control my imaginations." evil men. They're imagining everything that they can oppose God, that they they think they're the center of the world. But how often do we get that same thing and we've got to cast out those imaginations, not allow them to take root in our heart, in our mind.
So, he's talking about that. All right. And then, um, from there, we're going to talk about God as our refuge. We'll get into that next week. I think we'll go ahead and stop here and we'll have enough to finish up next week on this chapter as well. But there's a lot in this chapter. And the psalmist starts out by saying, "Lord, my soul needs to wait on you. I just need to be quiet and listen and and and I need to come to you for my salv. You know, you're the one my salvation. You're my rock. You're my defense. And and all these men can imagine all these things against you. But Lord, I'm going to wait on you. I'm going to expect something from you. and God, I'm gonna not be moved. And and that's where he comes to there. And so, we're going to look at the next part of talking about God as our refuge in verses seven and eight. in doing that.
