Passage
1 Timothy 1:8-11

In this sermon, Jon Brandt explores Paul’s correction of false doctrine regarding the proper use of God’s law. The law is good, but it was never intended for the righteous—those justified in Christ. Instead, it exposes humanity’s guilt and need for a Savior. Brandt explains that believers are freed from the penalty of sin through Christ’s death and resurrection, and now pursue righteousness out of love rather than fear of punishment. The law applies to lawbreakers and reveals both sins against God and sins against others. Ultimately, the law’s purpose is to drive people to the Gospel—the good news that even the most wicked can be saved through faith in Jesus Christ. A call to preach the true gospel without watering down the reality of God’s justice and the rescue that comes through Christ.
